The Night Before School / Tammi Wilhelm

The Night Before School……

‘Twas the night before school and all through the halls,
Every teacher was scurrying – some were stapling on walls.
The supplies were all labeled and names spelled by the door,
Posters were hung and there were tubs of books on the floor.
The children were home filled with excitement and glee,
They could not wait to start school and begin the journey.

The first day of school brings many emotions; excitement, anxiety, curiosity, wonder and joy!  We look forward to the adventure and opportunities that learning brings.   As I reflect on the first days of school in my life, I recall those moments of excitement with my new supplies and the “Wonder Woman” lunchbox.  I think back to my first day of teaching, in my very own classroom, and containing my nervous energy as I met the students I was responsible for educating.   I remember my first year as a principal and having “butterflies in my stomach” as I watched hundreds of students walk through the halls of our school.  I was able to share in their joy and comfort their tears, as so many arrived for the first time.  As this new year approaches, I know we will all experience the emotions again and that is what makes the first day of school so awesome!  Every year brings a new journey, and everyone looks forward to what lies ahead!
